WHMIS Training

METI’s Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems (WHMIS Training) is for all workers who are exposed or likely to be exposed to hazardous products, use, store, handle, or dispose of hazardous products, supervise or manage workers who may be exposed or handle hazardous products, or are involved in emergency response.

WHMIS Training

Our WHMIS training is developed to educate workers who may be exposed to products covered by the Hazardous Products Act and meets the criteria for inclusion in one or more of the WHMIS hazard classes.

WHMIS Training

WHMIS Training delivers the content, requirements, and hazard communication standards that Canada uses to protect the health and safety of workers who handle hazardous chemicals. After you have successfully completed this training, you should be able to effectively answer the following questions:

  • What are the roles and responsibilities within WHMIS?
  • Where can I get hazard information?
  • What are the hazards of the controlled product?
  • How am I protected from those hazards?
  • What do I do in the case of an emergency?

Key Benefits WHMIS Training

After completing WHIMS, successful participants will be able to interpret the communication provided within WHMIS in order to work safely with or around hazardous substances and:

1. Discuss how WHMIS classifies workplace hazardous materials
2. Distinguish among the duties within WHMIS
3. Identify main concerns for physical and health hazards
4. Recognize the contents of a Safety Data Sheet
5. Indicate how to determine whether the SDS has been updated
6. Distinguish between the types of labels
7. Identify what information is placed on labels
8. Indicate when workplace labels are required

History of WHMIS in Canada

1988
In 1988, Canada started using the WHMIS system in response to the Canadian workers’ right to know about the safety and health hazards that may be associated with the materials or chemicals they use at work.
WHMIS was created to help stop the injuries, illnesses, deaths, medical costs, and fires caused by hazardous materials.
The WHMIS system worked well and was a force that contributed to limiting workers’ exposure to hazardous materials in Canada, but other nations were using different ‘symbols’ and ‘material data sheets’ to identify, classify and communicate hazardous materials.
2015
On February 11, 2015, the Government of Canada modified the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) 1988 to align with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) for workplace chemicals. The goal of GHS is to have a standardized set of rules for classifying hazards and labeling chemical products that is to be adopted and used globally.
2018
Until December 1, 2018, suppliers (manufacturers and importers) could use either the old version of WHMIS 1988 or WHMIS 2015 to classify and communicate the hazards of their products. Any new products or new labelling had to fall into the WHMIS GHS standards. As of December 1, 2019, WHMIS 2015 is the accepted training.
2023
On January 4, 2023, Health Canada published amendments to the Hazardous Products Regulations (HPR) in the Canada Gazette, Part II, to align with the 7th revised edition, and certain provisions of the 8th revised edition, of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). The amendments came into force on December 15, 2022, providing a 3-year transition period, ending on December 14, 2025.
2024
As of June 18, 2024, the WHMIS Regulations have been incorporated as Part 3 of the Workplace Health and Safety Regulations (WHSR). The WHSRs now reflect the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) provisions adopted by the federal Hazardous Products Act.
